Replaceable

from Politics by Void Where Prohibited

/

about

Written in 1992 about a singularly bad day for a co-worker and myself as his immediate supervisor. We have made several changes to the lyrics to change the perspective a bit.

Yes, she did make the point, several times in that conversation, that 'everyone is replaceable'. I left that job less than six months later.

lyrics

She sits across the desk from me
Sipping cappuccino with the morning newspaper
Time
Time to get the lecture
Time for middle management to pay its dues

And every word she says
Is reasoned and finely tooled
It's the production line
Of her manufactured point of view

Small
Almost imperceptible
A movement out of order that
Unbalanced the equation
Fall
A philosophic stumble
A half forgotten mumble that has
Now been resurrected

“You’ve got to go”, she said
“A strange malignant point of view”
“We cut the cancer out, and in this case the cancer’s you.”

Everyone’s replaceable
Every picture traceable in a machine’s view
Plans are two dimensional and infinitely flexible to a machine’s rule
Move them in and cut them out
Till you get the product right
Get the product right, keep the prize in sight
And you will get promoted

Everyone’s replaceable everyone’s replaceable
And so are you
If everyone’s replaceable, everyone’s replaceable
Then so are you
